Biography

Alva Ree “Marie” Winfree, age 82, died in Jacksonville, Florida on Sunday, March 7, 2010 after a long illness.

Born October 30, 1927, in Tullahoma, Tennessee, to Willie Elizabeth and Robert Deaton, she was the oldest daughter of eleven children. On October 15, 1943 she married Joe Carl Winfree.

She lived with her husband and four children in the Chicago area for many years before returning to Tennessee, where she worked in the medical field both at Coffee County Medical Center and home health. After the death of her husband, Joe, in 1997, she retired and moved to Jacksonville, Florida. Alva was a member of Shindler Baptist Church in Jacksonville.

Alva will be especially remembered for her loving and caring nature. She always helped, both family, friends and strangers in their time of need.

Alva is survived by her children: daughter and son-in-law, Betty Ann and Jack Bortel; son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Julie Winfree; son Carl Winfree; son and daughter-in-law Tommy and Joan Winfree. Also her grandchildren: Joanna Andrade, Valentin Andrade, Jr., Sheryl Andrade, Lisa Smith, Joey Winfree, Megan Winfree, T.J. Winfree, Patrick Winfree, Paul Winfree, Tammie and Troy Drannen, and great-grandchildren; Jason Andrade, Alyssa Smith, Jeffory and Alexis Rollen, Doug Guenther, Kevin and Megan Drannen, and Isaiah Winfree. Siblings: Dot Nowlin, Betty Jo Schmidt, and Donnie Deaton. Numerous nieces and nephews.

Alva was preceded in death by her husband Joe Carl Winfree, grandson Mark Edward Winfree, brothers Raymond, George and Lee Deaton, and sisters Wilma Hodge and Annie Ruth Deaton.

Services will be at Coffee County Funeral Home in Manchester, TN on Friday March 12, 2010 at 11:00 AM. Family will receive visitors at Coffee County Funeral Chapel on Thursday, March 11, 2010 between 5pm and 9pm. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Garden in Tullahoma following the service.
